There is a wide walkway on all sides the main temple which leads you to a large viewing platform with terrific views down over Chiang Mai, weather permitting. Just past the viewing platform is on the list of worlds largest gongs, which makes an earthly rich sound when struck. Give it a try, it is acceptable.

Inside the temple sophisticated are a number of pavilions, pagodas, statues and viharns. The pavilions contain the living quarters for monks. A small museum with ancient relics, photographs and old pieces of wat wares can also be visited. The Phra Ubosot or ordination hall is the place where the prayers take place. Striking a series of small bells in the enigmatic is believed to bring good fortune. Whenever there is wind all-around the atmosphere is filled with the sounds of wat bells adding to the calm and placidity of this gorgeous place. The main sanctuary and pagoda is surrounded by a platform voyager can climb through. The walls of the platform are covered with beautiful mural paintings, that tell the yam of the Jataka and the previous life of the Buddha.

Doi Suthep Temple is approached on foot by climbing a precipitous stair, which has 306 steps and is flanked by big mythical Nagas (Serpents), which symbolize humanity's move forward from earth into nirvana.

Wat Phra That Doi Suthep is very idyllic! You should absolutely climb the steps up to the wat. Even with all the traveler walking all-around with the wind blowing the bells it was placid.

How to go : Get here early or late to escape the crowds. To get here, take a songtaew from in front of the zoo, at the western end of Huai Kaeo roadway. The fare is 50 Thb going up and 40B for the Bhubing palace. The ride can get chilly, so take a jersey or jacket. The truck stops at the base of the great naga stairway.
